The tank was developed during World War I to help defeat the bloody stalemate of trench warfare of the Western Front. The Renault FT was a light tank to be used in a breakthrough and exploitation role and was equipped with either a low-velocity artillery piece or machine gun.

75mm Mle 1897- World War I French Cannon
The French 75mm Field Gun (“Matériel de 75mm Mle 1897″) is widely considered to be the first modern artillery piece. Adopted by the French army in 1897, it was the first gun to be equipped with a hydro-pneumatic recoil system, which allowed the gun to be fired in place without re-aiming between each round.

Designed to be Germany’s tanks for fighting other tanks, the Panzer III saw its successful battlefield debut during the invasion of Poland. It proved to be a reliable, winning design and fulfilled its intended role with ease. The Panzer III continued to see action in every battlefield in Europe and North Africa. It was eventually phased out of production in 1943, when it could no longer compete with more advanced Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and KV series. Panzer III hulls continued to be used in the manufacture of the Sturmgeschütz III, one of the most successful  assault guns / tank destroyers to see action in World War II.

“Easy Eight” was the nickname for the final World War II production model of the famous American Sherman Tank. It’s official designation is the M4A3E8(76)W which denotes the following features: Welded steel hull, Ford GAA V8 gasoline engine, horizontal volute spring suspension, 23-inch wide tracks, 76mm main gun in a T-23 turret, and “wet” ammunition stowage.

While never designed to battle heavy German armor, this model was far more capable than the original Sherman tanks rolled out just three years earlier. The “Easy Eight” was the only Sherman to remain in American service following World War II and it would see further action on the Korean Peninsula supporting UN forces. The “Easy Eight” was also the basis of the famous Israeli “Super Shermans” which saw action well into the 1970’s. More than 49,000 Sherman Tanks were built during World War II. Many thousands were distributed to the Allies through the Lend-Lease program.

We’ve saved the best Sherman tank for last!  The standard production kit includes one US Tanker minifig with the armored division sleeve print. It also has smooth rolling LEGO tracks, four opening crew hatches (inside is not detailed, but can be easily accessed for adding your own interior), custom pad-printed US star insignia tiles, and BrickArms M2HB and M1919 machine guns for secondary armament.

Renault FT / M1917 Light Tank

The tank was developed during World War I to help defeat the bloody stalemate of trench warfare of the Western Front. The Renault FT was a light tank to be used in a breakthrough and exploitation role and was equipped with either a low-velocity artillery piece or machine gun. It’s two-man crew consisted of a driver and tank commander, who doubled as the tank’s gunner. Over 3000 FTs were built in France during World War I where it was successfully used by both French and American armored forces. A copy of the FT was manufactured in the USA under license and was standardized as the M1917. The American verson can be easily distinguished by the location of the muffler to the left side of the hull, whereas the original French version had the muffler located on the right. The Renault FT has the distinction of setting the pattern for future tank development: fully tracked vehicle with engine located in the rear, and a single fully-rotating turret.

As World War I raged in Europe, the US Army found itself in need of a modern artillery piece should America decide to become involved. The French 75mm Modele 1897 was the best canditiate and is widely considered by historians to be the first modern cannon. It was the first to be fitted with a hydropneumatic recoil mechanism, which meant it could be fired and reloaded without having to reposition the gun. When America entered the war, the US Army adopted the French design for it’s field artillery batteries, and fielded more than 1900 guns by the war’s end. Domestic production began in spring of 1918, but most guns used during the war were French manufactured. The M1897 again saw service in World War II, with many being exported to Great Britain under lend-lease agreements, and others being adapted to anti-tank guns.
