The A12 Infantry Tank Mk II, universally known as the Matilda II, was a British tank used in the Second World War. Its designed intent was to support infantry units during attacks, therefore it was heavily armored at the expense of mobility and firepower. It’s armament consisted of a QF 2 Pounder (40mm) anti-tank gun and a single Besa machine gun mounted coaxially in the turret. The Matilda II is the only British tank to see action during the entire war, but it is most commonly associated with the North Africa campaign. Its unique disruptive camouflage pattern was modeled after the type used on World War I battleships. Its heavy armor outclassed most contemporary early war German tanks and for a time earned it the nickname “Queen of the Desert.” The arrival of increasingly more powerfully armed German tanks caused the Matilda II to be phased out of operations in North Africa by the end of 1942.

PANZER II Ausf C
The Panzer II was German light tank of World War II. It was a stop-gap design, rushed into production just prior to the outbreak of fighting, while the more advanced Panzer III and Panzer IVs were still under development. Armed with a 20mm cannon and MG34 machine gun, the Panzer proved to be a competent design and played a significant role early in the war. It participated in such as the campaigns in Poland, France, Soviet Union, and North Africa. While it was a successful design, the Panzer II’s light armor and weapons would be no match for heavier Allied equipment introduced later in the war. The Panzer II chassis was also used for several self-propelled guns, including the effective Mardar II tank destroyer and the Wespe 105mm howitzer.
The Brickmania Panzer II Ausf C was modeled after the tanks of the Deutsches Afrikakorps, who fought in the desert campaigns of North Africa in 1940-1942.

Renault FT / M1917 Light Tank
The tank was developed during World War I to help defeat the bloody stalemate of trench warfare of the Western Front. The Renault FT was a light tank to be used in a breakthrough and exploitation role and was equipped with either a low-velocity artillery piece or machine gun.
75mm Mle 1897- World War I French Cannon
The French 75mm Field Gun (“Matériel de 75mm Mle 1897″) is widely considered to be the first modern artillery piece. Adopted by the French army in 1897, it was the first gun to be equipped with a hydro-pneumatic recoil system, which allowed the gun to be fired in place without re-aiming between each round.
Designed to be Germany’s tanks for fighting other tanks, the Panzer III saw its successful battlefield debut during the invasion of Poland. It proved to be a reliable, winning design and fulfilled its intended role with ease. The Panzer III continued to see action in every battlefield in Europe and North Africa. It was eventually phased out of production in 1943, when it could no longer compete with more advanced Soviet tanks such as the T-34 and KV series. Panzer III hulls continued to be used in the manufacture of the Sturmgeschütz III, one of the most successful assault guns / tank destroyers to see action in World War II.

Developed in great secrecy, the T-34 was Russia’s answer to the growing military threat of Germany in the 1930s. Incorporating many new and innovative features, such as the Christie suspension system and sloping armor, its success was considered a gamble by the Communist Party bosses. While the Soviet Union already had a heavy tank series in production (KV series), the T-34 program was given the go ahead. Stalin’s rationale was that the designers could always be executed if the project failed. While not in full production when Hitler unleashed Operation Barbarossa against the Soviet Union, the appearance of the T-34 stunned the German High Command. Not only was the T-34 able to withstand almost anything the Germans could throw at it, but its 76mm gun could easily knock out both Panzer IIIs and IVs, then the heaviest tanks in the German arsenal.

At the outbreak of World War Two, the US Army’s tank force was woefully unequipped to handle the latest European tank developments. The existing American tanks (M1 and M2) were inadequately armed and armored compared to the German panzer forces that had swept across Europe in the early months of the war. Facing the very real possibility of being pulled into a European conflict and under pressure to supply material to the beleaguered British army, an urgent call for a more powerful new tank was issued.
American industry heeded the call and began work on a tough new tank design with heavier armor and a 75 mm main gun. This new tank would eventually be known as the M4 Sherman medium tank, a complex and powerful tank that would take years to design and produce. In the meantime the M3 medium tank was rushed into production, mounting a 75mm main gun in an antiquated hull-mounted sponson. The M3 also has a 37mm high-velocity anti-tank gun in a turret mounted offset to the left top of the bulky hull. There was an additional commander’s cupola with a 30 cal. machine gun mounted on top of the 37mm gun turret (giving a turret on turret effect).
The British Army found themselves urgently in need of replacement tanks for those abandoned in Dunkirk after the fall of France. The United States was able to provide the newly minted M3 in great numbers through the Lend-Lease program. While the British bought large numbers of the original M3 design, they also ordered large numbers with a specially designed turret, which had a large compartment at the rear to house a radio and eliminated the commander’s cupola. The British dubbed the original M3 the “Lee” and the modified version was called the “Grant.”
Both variants of the M3 played a pivotal role in the North Africa campaigns. While mounting of the 75mm gun low in the hull and the over-all high silhouette of the tank had many disadvantages, the M3 proved itself effective and reliable on the battlefield. For a brief time the M3’s 75mm gun dominated battlefields verses the German Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks. Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery concluded his successful route of the German and Italian armies in North Africa while riding in a M3 Grant (it is preserved today in London’s Imperial War Museum).
Unfortunately, the M3’s battlefield dominance proved short lived as Germany up-gunned their own tanks and developed the more powerful Tiger and Panther tanks. By 1943 the M3 was declared obsolete and was phased out of service in the European theater as the M4 Sherman became available in large numbers. The M3 continued service in the Pacific theatre until the end of World War Two, where it proved effective against infantry and the diminutive Japanese tank forces. Although the design was greatly flawed and out of date, the M3 proved to be a satisfactory interim solution for American and British needs, with more than 6000 being produced between August 1941 and December 1942.

The Chaffee was a light tank introduced at the end of World War II to replace the worn out and under-gunned M3/M5 Stuart tank. The Chaffee first saw action against the German Ardennes offensive—known today as the Battle of the Bulge. Lightly armored and fast, the M24 was a nimble scout vehicle that was armed with the same 75mm gun as the M4 Sherman tank. The M24 Chaffee was retired from US service after the Korean War, being replaced by the M41 Walker Bulldog. Around the world, Chaffees have soldiered on in other armed services to modern times. During the Vietnam War, the South Vietnamese Army effectively fielded Chaffee tanks that were left behind when the French Colonial Army withdrew in the late 1950s.
